I bought one of these in March 2010 and used it daily for six months, then a couple times a week after that. It saved me a lot of money making my own coffee instead of paying a dollar for a cup each day at the work cafeteria.

This works best with your own ground beans (and tastes better, too), of course, but since the point of buying this cup was for me to save money, I used this most with regular Folgers, and I didn't have any issues with the grounds escaping the mesh plunger. I prefer sweet & light coffee, so my personal mixture was 2 teaspoons of coffee, 2 teaspoons of powdered creamer, and 2 teaspoons of sugar -- stir the sludge until the creamer & sugar are dissolved, then put the top on and slowly lower the plunger.

The stowaway container held the full 6 teaspoons of my recipe no problem, so I could make a second cup at work if I needed it. If you're not a sissy & drink your coffee black, you could be prepared for a number of refills.

I've cut down on my coffee consumption, so I need to buy some loose tea and try that out. I'm sure it will work just as well.

My cup was a darker green that doesn't seem to be available any more, which is a shame because it's a beautiful color.

Perhaps I got a dud, but the seal on the plunger mechanism is not tight. When I try to drink from the unit, drops of coffee leak out of the seal and go on my shirt. I am retuning mine and MAY try another one.

UPDATE: The problem was a blemish or slightly raised spot on the inside rim of the cup (not properly finished). It prevented the "O" ring from sealing. The replacement is fine. LOOK at the inside of the rim if you can! Incidentally, the manufacturer never responded to my e-mail. Happily, I purchased one with a logo from a local franchise coffee shop and they replaced it. So I will leave my rating at one star for the lack of customer service from the manufacturer.

I've had several Planetary Design (PD) mugs, including an older version of the double-shot. The older version had a plastic handle which would break off at the attachment screw if you didn't tighten it occasionally. No problem, just tighten the screw every couple months. Should have put it in the instructions, duh, instead PD decided to redesign the handle, ouch.

This new handle is heavier than the plastic, it's gimmicky AND the stub broke off within two months of use due to a poor quality weld. Dude, I wasn't using the new and improved polio-leg-brace-handle to rappel down a cliff in Utah, I was sitting in my kitchen sipping a cup when one attachment popped off and the handle suddenly slipped sideways spilling a bit on the very verge of a McDonald's-scalding-coffee-cup incident. Whew.

The spring surrounding the plunger screen extends too wide making it difficult to insert the plunger into the mug without bending or breaking the plastic that frames the screen. The older version and other mugs from PD were just right in this respect. Seems as if someone misplaced the design specs on this lot.

I hope the sub-contractors making these things aren't also manufacturing airplane parts or we might all be in for some bad landings, yo.

The filter screen weave and construction is great; I can grind coffee fine or course and still be able to press the plunger down. The bit of coffee silt that escapes is a small price to pay for flexibility. I may even enjoy a little grit, I think of it as roughage.

As with the older design, we could lose the little sip screen, which can clog and deprive me of coffee grounds between my teeth.

The spare coffee holder cup in the base now has a screw in cap, the only improvement on the older design. Good for you, PD, you improved the one useless feature of this mug.

All in all, I used to love the PD mugs. They were relatively indestructible, unique and made great coffee. But I can't recommend this one.
